The "J.P." over "L" with "France" under the initials mark is the mark the Pouyat factory put on pieces to signify that they had made the white porcelain. This porcelain piece was produced between the 1800's and 1932.

Jean Pouyat was a major exporter of porcelain to the United States and sent both decorated and undecorated items called “whites”. "Whites" were widely used by American decorating workshops and by amateur porcelain painters.

In 1768, the raw materials for making Chinese-style hard paste porcelain were discovered in Limoges, France, located about 200 miles south of Paris.

Before the kaolin (porcelain clay)was discovered at Limoges, the Pouyat family made faience, a type of tin glazed earthenware, in the nearby town of St. Yrieix. By the end of the 18th century they actually owned some kaolin deposits.

In the early 1800s, the family opened a porcelain-making factory in Paris. In 1842 Jean Pouyat opened family's porcelain company in Limoges.

CARE: We recommend washing this Jean Pouyat Limoges porcelain tray with purple flowers by hand because of the gold detailing. Use a mild detergent in warm water. If you don't plan on doing the dishes immediately, give your plates a quick rinse to remove as much food as possible. It's best to rinse your dishes rather than let pieces sit too long in soapy water.
